Botox treatment

Botox (Botulinum A toxin) treatment

Botox (Botulinum A toxin) is a simple non-surgical procedure that can dramatically reduce your wrinkles. It is appropriate for all ages for the long-term treatment and PREVENTION of facial wrinkles. It is the number one cosmetic procedure in the world today!

What is botulinum toxin treatment?

Botulinum Toxin therapy is a natural, highly purified protein that is extracted from the bacteria, Clostridium Botulinum, in a similar way that penicillin is from mould. The product is produced under strictly regulated conditions and although it contains a minute amount of human blood protein, modern screening procedures eliminate the risk of blood borne disease.

How does botox work?

Botox treatment works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoothed, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. Once the muscles are relaxed, one cannot contract them and continue to make the undesirable facial expressions. Thus the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

Botox is a simple 10-minute procedure performed by a doctor. The most common areas we treat are the frown lines, lines on the forehead, and the ‘Crows Feet’ around the eyes. However it is also successfully used for lines around the mouth, shaping your jaw muscles, lifting your brow, hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) and for tension-migraine headaches. Botox treatments are also used to treat medical conditions such as Bell’s palsy and Facial spasms.

What to expect from the treatment?

A full medical history will be taken prior to your treatment and you will have an opportunity to discuss any aspects with us. You will need to complete a consent form before treatment.

We determine exactly where to use the product to achieve the best results for you. No local anaesthetic is required, although we may use ice or apply a topical anaesthetic cream if required. Tiny amounts are injected into selected facial muscles using a very fine needle. Discomfort is minimal and brief described as an ant bite sting, which lasts for a few seconds.

I don’t want to look “frozen”.  Will I still be able to show expression?

If your botox treatment is administered properly by a highly-trained clinician, you will still be able to show expression. Depending on the area treated, it may be appropriate to only weaken the muscle movement. You can discuss this prior to treatment.

The vast majority of clients are extremely happy with the results of a botox treatment. The most common comment made by friends and family of clients after receiving botox is that they appear to be more “rested.”

Does this treatment cause more wrinkles to form?

The treatment relaxes facial muscles that cause expression lines, it does not cause more wrinkles to form.

What side effects could occur?

Occasional tenderness and mild bruising at the injection site, mild headache in the first week after treatment, drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow which is uncommon and temporary lasting 1-4 weeks, asymmetrical effect which is correctable with a free top-up 14 days after treatment. There have been no permanent side effects reported.

Where can it be used?

It can be used in frown lines between your eyebrows and on your forehead. However it is also successfully used in the “crow’s feet”, smokers lines around the mouth and treating Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) for tension- migraine headaches, and many other facial and neck areas.

What aftercare do I need?

Don’t rub the treated area, don’t lie down for 3 hours after the treatment, don’t have a facial within a week of treatment.

Who should not get treated with botox?

Botox has not been studied in pregnancy, and it is therefore unknown if fetal harm will result if a pregnant woman is treated with botox. Therefore, the use of botox is not recommended during pregnancy. Additionally, it is unknown if botox (botulinum A exotoxin) is excreted in breast milk, where it could affect a nursing infant. Therefore, botox treatment is not recommended for use in lactating women. Additionally, patients with neuromuscular disease, such as myasthenia gravis and Eaton-Lambert syndrome, should not be treated with botox as it may worsen these conditions. Of course, anyone who has had an allergic reaction to botox should not be treated.
